23 Jan Debilitating ankle arthritis? A total ankle replacement may be your answer
We’ve all heard of total hip and total knee replacements. I’m sure most of us know someone who’s had one of these procedures. The treatment of arthritis has changed dramatically in the past decade especially with the ankle. The advent of new technology and improved biomechanical knowledge of the ankle has improved the outcomes with total ankle replacement. The newest generation of ankle replacements have provided surgeons with an excellent option in the treatment of ankle arthritis and this procedure has proven to be a better option to ankle fusion (arthrodesis) in the proper situation.
Ankle replacement is an awesome procedure as long as the proper ankle implant is placed in the proper patient. However, arthrodesis of the ankle versus replacement may be the right procedure in some patients. In the well-aligned ankle or an ankle where alignment can be improved with boney and soft tissue procedures an ankle replacement may be indicated and is the superior procedure. The ankle replacement patient of choice is one with ankle arthritis that is well-aligned.
Being at the forefront of new procedures, Strash Foot and Ankle Care will have a surgeon accomplished in total ankle replacement starting with the practice in July of this year. Stay tuned for more information on this exciting procedure and who the new surgeon will be!
