12 Apr Mentoring. There’s nothing more gratifying
Mentor: someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person. mentor. verb.
One of the greatest joys is to pass along information and advice to younger individuals and then watch them blossom and develop. I feel there’s nothing greater than performing this task through education, giving advice, leading by example and sports. It’s so very rewarding to see young individuals grow and develop into productive members of our society after pouring into them.
As I’ve said before, I believe life experiences are just as (if not more so!) important as traditional academic learning. You never know how a life experience will positively affect a young person as they pursue their dreams.
This week I had the privilege to give Amethyst Mann an inside and close-up look at a reconstructive foot and ankle surgical case I performed at the hospital. I’ve done this for some time now, hosting high school and middle school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. This brief picture into the operating room and hospital gives students a view of what it might be like to be a surgeon. I am always amazed at how intelligent, curious, and compassionate these young people are.
This experience is always refreshing and enlightening to me as it renews my hope for our future generations of doctors and medical professionals. I’m honored to play a small role in educating and encouraging young students to chase their dreams, and look forward to mentoring more students in the future.
